AFTER SCHOOL program

We all need a break from instruction from time to time. Let your kids be the boss! Their imagination comes alive with exciting reuse materials, and time and space to explore. Your child enjoys a moment to catch up on homework, a hands-on group activity, some practical tool and technique instructions, and then self-directed but guided art time. Emphasis on learning and process, with long-term finished pieces to take home.

Building An Animal Home
Inspired by the many animals and insects that inhabit the Bay Area, we will make mixed media sculptures with wood, branches, clay, rafia, cloth, wire and much more.

October 24
Making Earth Dumplings and Flying Seeds
This is the time of year when many plants are dropping their seeds. Let’s look at some of these seeds up close. And study how they fly, drift, spin and float. We will make paper cutouts that move like seeds and Tsuchi Dango (Earth Dumplings), made with soil, clay, water and native wildflower seeds to toss or place in the hills, in a garden or a neighborhood patch of earth.

November 7
Exploring With Leaves
Leaves are falling, nourishing and mulching the soil, providing habitat for creatures living on  the ground and in the soil. Let’s look closely at the variety of different types of leaves. We will explore the leaves making prints, rubbings, stencils and paintings.

November 21
Wings of Migrating Birds
Many birds migrate to our home by the bay, the largest estuary on the Pacific Coast…shorebirds, songbirds and raptors. Let’s make wearable wings inspired by the many birds who come each year. With root vegetables and fungi we will add color to our wings.

December 5
Ocean Animal Stuffies
Let’s learn about many of the ocean animals and sew some stuffies

December 19
Milky Way Galaxy Mobiles
Using a variety of beautiful papers, images, beads, sticks and wire we will make hanging galaxy sculptures.
